COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Broadway Circle—a new family homeless shelter and low-income apartment complex run by Pathfinder Services—is set to open next week in Minot, offering six shelter spaces and 17 apartments for families in need.  KFYR-TV
  • KMOT and the Minot Area Homeless Coalition are running their 13th annual toy drive to help local children receive gifts this Christmas. The drive collected hundreds of toys and (roughly $1,200) in gift cards last year, and families can call for gifts from Dec. 16 to Christmas Eve morning.  KFYR-TV
  • Junkin’ Market Days is in Magic City for the first time with local small businesses selling unique clothing and home decor. The event will run Friday and Saturday at the State Fair Center for holiday shopping with $5 entry & free ticket promotions on Facebook.  KFYR-TV
  • Local groups and the First District Health Unit are working to bring back a winter warming shelter in Minot as temperatures drop below 30 below. The board met on Dec. 11 and will reconvene on Dec. 18 (using the city auditorium as a potential site) to secure a safe space during extreme cold.  Minot Daily News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The board approved documents to sell Bell School with a listing agreement by Northern Auction, with a walkthrough on Dec. 15 and an auction on Feb. 11 (separate from the online sale). Board member Scott Louser said hockey teams lack 30 players for separate squads (changes expected after 2030).  Minot Daily News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Senator Hoeven, Senator Cramer, and Governor Armstrong outlined a bipartisan plan to help 40,000+ North Dakotans avoid premium hikes from expiring ACA tax credits, with officials saying a compromise could be reached next week or in January before the Jan. 15 open enrollment period ends.  KFYR-TV

SPORTS NEWS

  • Minot State men’s hockey team adds freshman forward Sean Williams, a transfer from Division III Oswego State, with his debut planned Jan. 9 at 7:30 p.m. at All-Seasons Arena to boost the team's offense.  Minot Daily News
  • Minot United gymnastics placed second with a team score of 138.875 at the Julie Ziegler Memorial Meet on Thursday, Dec. 11 at Bismarck Gymnastics Academy (their second straight runner-up finish) and will next compete at the Mandan Christmas Meet on Friday, Dec. 19 at 5 p.m.  Minot Daily News
  • The Bishop Ryan Lions are gearing up for the new season after last season’s state championship. Coach Bosch said the team will rely on returning seniors and juniors while focusing on defense (their signature style) to fill big shoes.  Minot Daily News
