COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Larry Brown, a former Air Force airman stationed at Minot Air Force Base, is working to open Masquerades—an interactive center with a roller rink and go-karts for kids and families—and has partnered with local businesses and the Chamber EDC to raise nearly $1 million. Although a key tourism grant was turned down, he will seek local investments to start construction by fall 2026.  Northern Sentry
  • William J. Senger served as a decorated pilot for both the RCAF and USAAF during WWII—born on a farm southwest of Esmond in 1915, he flew 46 combat missions and earned multiple distinguished awards—he later became a crop duster in California until his fatal flight accident in June 1954.  Northern Sentry
  • Millo Wallace, commander of the local American Legion, served in the Army for 22½ years and now works to support veterans with PTSD and suicide prevention—he urges local citizens to back those who served. Born and raised in Minot, Wallace uses his experience with a tough transition to civilian life to guide his community support efforts.  Minot Daily News
  • Minot veteran Larry Verraneault, 78, who served in the Marines and 17½ years in the Air Force, shot a trophy bull elk early this morning near Minot Air Force Base—receiving help from a local landowner and helper—and later mounted the animal as a tribute to his service. He thanked everyone for their assistance during his memorable hunt.  Northern Sentry
  • The Great Plains Food Bank said the federal shutdown increased food needs for families in North Dakota and Clay County, Minnesota—Governor Kelly Armstrong and Health and Human Services provided $915,000 to boost services. The organization will use the funds to deliver an extra 450,000 pounds of food in November and expand its mobile pantry routes to reach about 24,000 households.  Minot Daily News
  • Jeremy and Matt Buller, owners of ABRA in Minot, will host a Veterans Day breakfast at 629 20th Ave SE from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. to honor veterans—these events, along with an annual summer community day featuring a car show and kid’s activities, reflect their long family history of military service.  Northern Sentry
  • Clarence McCormack enlisted in Minot and became the first Ward County soldier to volunteer for World War I in 1917; he died on July 20, 1918 in a trench near the Battle of Soissons after a German shell exploded nearby. His service is honored by an American Legion post named after him that holds Memorial Day and Veterans Day events—keeping his legacy alive in our community.  Northern Sentry
  • Retired Chief Master Sergeant Detrick Thomas served 26 years at Minot AFB — from his early fighter jet dreams to leading more than 280 personnel— and he still mentors airmen while supporting local veteran events. His journey, celebrated this Veterans Day, shows a lifelong commitment to service and the strong community bonds he has built in Minot.  Northern Sentry
  • On Oct. 12, veteran Ernie Hoelscher at the North Dakota Veterans Home saw his restored Civil War freight wagon brought by local caretaker Phil Newman—who used Belgian Draft horses for rides—and his family joined a tribute that honored his restoration work begun in 1974.  Northern Sentry

  • Aspire Credit Union in Minot announced promotions for Brianna Weeks and Bobbi Hansen. Weeks, a dedicated member for eight years, will serve as Operations manager while Hansen, with over a decade of service, will lead all lending operations—aimed at supporting growth and member service.  Minot Daily News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Retired CMSgt David Richard spent 30 years in the Air Force and now serves as a GS civilian at Minot AFB, where he leads efforts to keep deployment readiness high—he began his career in 1989 as a weapons loader and returned to the base in 2009 to continue his service. He now works to ensure that Airmen have the resources they need for successful deployments.  Northern Sentry
  • The North Dakota Department of Commerce has opened the Automation Tax Credit Program Portal for applications that offer a 15% income tax credit for buying or leasing automation equipment used in manufacturing or animal agriculture. Applicants must submit complete documents by 5 p.m. on Jan. 31—allowing up to three working days to receive a portal invitation.  Minot Daily News
  • North Dakota Insurance Department has issued a bulletin warning insurers and licensed producers against tactics that limit seniors' access to fair Medicare coverage. The bulletin requires companies to keep enrollment applications easy to find—avoid changing approved commissions mid-year— and will enforce the rules to protect consumers.  Minot Daily News
  • City crews reopened Mall Loop Road at Dakota Square last week and urged drivers to use caution as landscaping and cleanup continue on the storm sewer replacement project—designed to upgrade aging pipes for the 9,500-acre Puppy Dog Coulee drainage basin—ensuring safer travel through the area.  Minot Daily News
