COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A healthy, 145-pound male giraffe calf was born at 10 p.m. on Nov. 2 at Roosevelt Park Zoo’s state-of-the-art Giraffe Barn—marking mother Kianga’s 11th calf and father Kioni’s first under a conservation plan to help protect vulnerable giraffe populations. Visitors will soon be able to view the new calf and its mother in the African Plains Building.  Minot Daily News
  • Roosevelt Park Zoo in Minot welcomed the birth of a baby giraffe on Sunday night—born at 10 p.m. to Kianga and Kioni, the calf weighs 145 pounds and will soon be viewable in the African Plains Building. The newborn is not yet named and highlights the silent extinction threat facing giraffes as fewer than 117,000 remain in the wild.  KFYR-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Eighth-grader Clara Zheng from Erik Ramstad Middle School in Minot won first place at the state finals and will represent North Dakota at the National Civics Bee Championship in Washington — D.C. on Tuesday, Nov. 11.  Minot Daily News

  • Researchers explain how warm and cold air and wind change sound travel and show that snow absorbs noise—making for quieter conditions. The study ties basic weather science to everyday observations in our community.  KFYR-TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • During National Family Caregivers Month a North Dakotan caregiver described her hard journey caring for a loved one with serious health issues—she faced obstacles balancing work and extra expenses. New AARP research shows over 140000 state adults provide unpaid care and legislators have taken steps to support them—policymakers are also debating a federal tax credit.  Minot Daily News

  • Glenburn senior Emma Jones led the Panthers volleyball team to its first district championship in school history and is committed to playing basketball at Minot State.  KFYR-TV
  • Minot North senior Aven Kelly signed with Bismarck State volleyball Wednesday—he is the first college signee in school history and said he is excited to play at the next level.  KFYR-TV
