COMMUNITY NEWS

  • SRT and NTCA presented a $5,000 community grant on Tuesday, Oct. 7 to Local Motives at the new Citizens Alley in downtown Minot—$4,500 came from the Foundation for Rural Service and $500 from SRT, funding three checker/chess board picnic tables and game pieces to enhance passive recreation.  Minot Daily News
  • Cadet Jean DeHaan and the Magic City Civil Air Patrol are asking local businesses to help sponsor a live Balsam wreath for every veteran's grave at Rosehill Memorial Park Cemetery—each wreath costing $17 and partly funding the squadron’s training programs until November 28. This youth-led effort honors veterans and supports the future generation of leaders in Minot.  Northern Sentry
  • Retired firefighters met at Minot Air Force Base where on-duty crews shared stories and General Thomas Bussiere stressed the base’s vital role amid harsh weather. A free Salute To Veterans Brass Band concert will be held at Ann Nicole Nelson Hall on Sunday, October 12th at 4 p.m.—it will honor veterans in our community.  Northern Sentry

CRIME NEWS

  • A Moorhead writer’s group had a U-Haul trailer with $5,000 in books and display equipment stolen at a Minot hotel during Midwest MonsterCon when someone took keys from a purse that also led to a black SUV being taken and later abandoned in a mobile home park— the trailer is still missing and anyone with information should call Minot PD at 701-852-0111.  KFYR-TV

CULTURE NEWS

  • At Minot AFB, residents and military spouses are embracing traditional sourdough baking for its fresh taste and health benefits—connecting community members and supporting local markets. Gourmet Chef will host a Sourdough Ladies Night on October 16th to help bakers improve their craft.  Northern Sentry

ECONOMY NEWS

  • North Dakota has nine major airports that offer direct flights to key hub cities to help travelers reach their destinations. At Minot, passengers can fly direct to Minneapolis on Delta and connect through cities like Denver and Las Vegas—providing many travel options.  Northern Sentry
  • At a conference on Oct. 7, officials showcased the active Minot Intermodal Facility where 75 inbound trucks loaded 85-90 rail containers with soybeans, distillers grains and sugar beet pellets for export. The site has helped local producers by widening export opportunities to West Coast seaports and Asian markets—demonstrating a successful public-private partnership.  Minot Daily News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Minot Public School board voted this week to sell Bell Elementary, which has been vacant since last May after the district closed Bell and McKinley schools in early 2024—officials have not provided further details about the sale.  KFYR-TV
  • High school seniors can meet guidance counselors, military recruiters, and visit their school office to explore college, career, or military options, including a bus ride to the Minot Area Career Expo at the North Dakota State Fair Center on October 29th from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Students also have deadlines to watch, such as applying for a $10,000 college scholarship in the 2026 U.S. Senate Youth Program – whose deadline is October 20th.  Northern Sentry

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The 91st Security Forces Group held a four-day defender challenge at Minot Air Force Base from Sept. 23 to 24 and Sept. 29 to 30 — an event that helped Airmen practice weapons handling, field operations, and endurance tests — to prepare for upcoming inspections. Teams from four squadrons competed in events such as an M4 carbine firing drill and a physical endurance race — activities that trained them to work well under stress — during the challenge.  Northern Sentry
  • County officials will consider proposals later this month asking legislators to modify property tax caps or exempt taxes on correctional facilities. Commissioners received an overview from ND Association of Counties executive director Aaron Birst on Oct. 7 — the draft resolutions may be amended at upcoming conferences on Oct. 26–28 and Dec. 9.  Minot Daily News

HEALTH NEWS

  • North Dakota Health and Human Services (HHS) announced that the Community Health Worker certification application is now online to help standardize training and offer a way for Medicaid to cover services. The application provides four paths to certification, including training, an internship, supervised work and reciprocity with another state.  Minot Daily News

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Minot is enjoying fall as residents decorate homes with giant skeletons, inflatable ghosts, and glowing pumpkins — creating a movie-like scene across neighborhoods. Local events such as haunted houses and trick-or-treats show the community coming together to celebrate autumn traditions.  Northern Sentry

SPORTS NEWS

  • Minot North High School athletes have shown strong fall sports performances; the football team won shutouts with scores of 28—0 and 43—0, the girls golf team finished sixth at state, and the boys tennis team earned state spots with close wins. The Sentinels will play their final home football game today and host a DECA Fall Festival after school.  Northern Sentry
