- ➤ George Hayden is a 100-year-old veteran from Watford City who served on a submarine in World War II and still mows his lawn, does his own laundry, and works in his shop. He was honored at the commissioning of the USS North Dakota—he says staying busy and relying on his family helped him live a long, full life. KFYR-TV

- ➤ The Greater Minot Zoological Society invites community members to attend Boo at the Zoo at Roosevelt Park Zoo on Oct. 18 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.—the zoo will be open only during event hours. Guests can dress in Halloween costumes, enjoy trick-or-treating, crafts, and warm drinks while vendors can sign up until Oct. 15 by calling the zoo. Minot Daily News

- ➤ The Minot School Board decided Tuesday, Oct. 7 to sell the former Bell school building southeast of town and set up a committee to plan the sale plus decide later on disposing of nearby developable parcels. The board stressed the sale must meet fair market value while buyers have shown interest in using the space for childcare, retail, or theater purposes. Minot Daily News
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The school board approved a $131.14 million budget on Oct. 7 that set property tax rates to collect $36.23 million, letting residential tax fall from $613.57 to $611.84 per $100,000 while commercial and cropland rates also dipped slightly. Business manager Laura Dokken said the district captured the full 3% tax-increase cap—future amendments may arise if further funds for facilities maintenance are needed. Minot Daily News
- ➤ A transportation plan for the Minot, Burlington, and Surrey area was presented to the county commission on Oct. 7 and focuses on preserving roads and planning nearly $500 million in capital projects — public input is accepted until Oct. 27 with a review of recommendations scheduled for the Oct. 21 meeting. - ➤ Minot City Council voted 4—3 on Monday night to reject a proposal that would have given local contractors a bidding advantage because of cost concerns. The council also approved the 2026 budget so Minot homeowners will pay less in property taxes next year. KFYR-TV

- ➤ Connor Ressler, a seventh seed from the West Region, will compete in the state tennis tournament in Grand Forks starting Friday, Oct. 10—where local schools including Minot High will face top players from the East. Doubles pair Nolan Moore and Oliver Thompson are seeded second and will also seek wins in the one-on-one format. Minot Daily News
- ➤ The Magicians, the third seed from the West Region, will play Grand Forks Central in the opening round of the boys tennis state dual tournament on Thursday, Oct. 9 at 10 a.m. at Choice Health & Fitness—Coach Scott DeLorme said his team hopes for a breakthrough as they aim for a top-five finish to challenge the EDC's long dominance. - ➤ Minot North seniors Kinzy Welstad and Emersyn Kopp were named to the Class A all-state team on Oct. 7 by the WDA. Welstad led her team with a 79.1 average while Kopp earned medalist honors at her home course at Vardon + both golfers achieved top placements in key tournaments. Minot Daily News
