COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Earlier this week, Bob and his wife Wanda decided to close The Little Cottage Café after careful thought. The decision ends a longtime local dining spot and changes community options.  KFYR-TV
  • Disabled American Veterans Chapter 4, Minot has organized a series of events for veterans, starting with a drive-through flu shot at the Minot VA Clinic on Oct. 2 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., free lunches at Edgewood on 10th on Oct. 13 and at Somerset Court on Oct. 14, plus a coffee gathering at 2 p.m. in the Veterans Room at the Ward County Administration Building on Oct. 15. The chapter also scheduled a North Central Veterans Stand Down on Oct. 16 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.—and a free breakfast at Minot Lodge on Oct. 30 at 8 a.m., with all events welcoming veterans and their guests.  Minot Daily News
  • Cadets from Magic City Civil Air Patrol Composite Squadron in Minot are leading a youth campaign to honor veterans by placing a live Balsam wreath on every grave at Rosehill Memorial Park Cemetery—donations of $17 will fund both the wreaths and essential cadet programming with the deadline set for Nov. 28.  Minot Daily News

  • Chung Park and the St. Olaf Orchestra will perform at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 19, at Ann Nicole Nelson Hall on the campus of Minot State University—this nationally praised ensemble featuring over 90 musicians will offer an energetic program.  Minot Daily News

  • Kelli Bremer, FCC Provider of the Month for October, said she loves providing a warm home environment with educational opportunities while also spending time with her family. She advised new providers to start slow — lean on experienced colleagues to build support and avoid burnout.  Northern Sentry

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Since the early 1950s, North Dakota's military presence has grown through air bases and National Guard camps and Task Force 21 has helped build strong ties so that many airmen and soldiers choose to stay in the region — settling in Minot and nearby communities. Soldiers at Camp Grafton often accept full-time positions after training and make a long-term commitment to the area.  Northern Sentry
  • The 23rd Bomber Generation Squadron was named October’s Squadron of the Month after returning from a mission in Guam for Exercise RESOLUTE FORCE PACIFIC — the unit later held a Summer Bash for over 500 airmen and their families and recognized 18 crew chiefs for their outstanding work in aircraft maintenance.  Northern Sentry
  • Minot Air Force Base will begin Fire Prevention Week on Oct. 5 when the 5th Civil Engineer Squadron’s Fire & Emergency Services flight focuses on safe use of lithium-ion batteries at home. Tomorrow, a parade will move through base housing from 8:45 to 10 a.m. followed by an open house until 2 p.m.—later, Oct. 8, the base library will host story time with Sparky the Fire Dog.  Northern Sentry
  • At the 14th Nuclear Triad Symposium at Minot Air Force Base, top military leaders stressed that upgrading the nearly outdated Minuteman III missiles and B-52 bombers is essential for U.S. deterrence—there were also plans to speed up the new Sentinel Missile program and call on Congress to support modernized nuclear capabilities.  Northern Sentry
  • Minot City Council chose Tom Joyce as the new city manager yesterday after a unanimous vote; he plans to meet with staff in a town hall and with local groups—such as those in economic development, education, and healthcare. His contract will be discussed on Monday, Oct 6 to finalize his appointment.  Minot Daily News

  • Area clinicians and school staff received training today +where they learned methods for helping teenagers manage chronic stress and trauma+. The session provided practical techniques that will support youth mental health.  KFYR-TV
  • A national study found that many North Dakota caregivers use carseats wrong—ND HHS is offering local resources to help improve proper use.  KFYR-TV
