COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Marynowitz family — Brian, Zoryana, Alisa, and baby Brian III — won the Grand Prize of $100 in the Summer Photo Contest at MAFB after almost 100 entries were received. Staff also picked Pandy Watrous as Staff Favorite and selected Rebecca Wang’s photo of kids on bikes to be on the 2026 Summer Guide cover.  Northern Sentry
  • Minot Park District announced that the annual Pumpkin Walk at Woodland Trail will take place from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on October 10 and October 11; the free event will feature food trucks and thousands of carved pumpkins along the trail—pledges for 2,000 pumpkins are still being accepted from individuals and local businesses.  Northern Sentry

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Minot Symphony Orchestra unveiled a vibrant new mural titled ‘Magic Symphony’ on the south side of the Kemper Building to honor its 100th season; local artist Max Patzner painted the work over Labor Day weekend and visitors are invited to take interactive photos with it. The project was funded by Wayne and Melinda Howe’s donation and the opening concert featuring pianist Frederic Chiu will take place on October 4.  Northern Sentry

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Fifth graders from Perkett Elementary School visited the Jack Hoeven Wee Links golf course to learn about STEAM plus golf through the First Green program, gaining hands-on experience in both science and sport.  KFYR-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Kelly Armstrong declared Sept. 15 to 19 as Adult Education and Family Literacy Week to honor programs that help people get better jobs, with the announcement made during the North Dakota Association for Lifelong Learning conference in Bismarck. Twelve adult education centers across the state—including one in Minot—offer free courses to help citizens earn a GED and improve their job prospects.  Minot Daily News
  • Minot Air Force Base began receiving up-armored Ford F-350 patrol trucks to replace older Humvees and BearCats, which will boost security and cut maintenance costs. Full delivery is expected to be completed by 2027.  Minot Daily News
  • Gov. Kelly Armstrong announced Thursday, Sept. 18 that military leaders agreed to form a second Air National Guard detachment to support the B-52 mission at Minot Air Force Base. The detachment, that includes elements of the 5th Bomb Wing and the 119th Wing, will add about 40 personnel by Oct. 1—Air Force Global Strike Command will plan for further expansion.  Minot Daily News
  • Minot City Council tabled on Sept. 15 a local preference policy that gives companies within a 15-mile area a chance to match nonlocal bids if their quote is within 5%—staff will add clarifying language before the policy returns to council on Oct. 6. The city also reached a settlement to acquire the Parkview mobile home park for the Mouse River Enhanced Flood Protection Project at a cost of $8.52 million—Parkview must settle outstanding taxes, remove the mobile homes, and clean up the property.  Minot Daily News
  • Attorney General Drew Wrigley filed a notice of appearance for one former and four current Commerce officials in a federal civil rights suit brought by Charles Hoefer, owner of an RV factory in Dunseith. The complaint alleges that the officials used their power to retaliate against Hoefer for uncovering evidence of an alleged aerospace parts scheme — the state may cover compensatory damages while the officials face personal liability for punitive damages.  Minot Daily News

  • North Dakota Health and Human Services released a Suicide Prevention and Response Toolkit for Schools that shows schools and parents how to spot warning signs and build support systems for student mental health. The toolkit also helps military families at Minot AFB deal with the challenges of school transitions—an essential resource for many.  Northern Sentry

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Waterfowl hunters are advised to follow basic safety practices when hunting from boats—wearing life jackets, handling firearms safely, and avoiding boat overloads as waterfowl season continues. Local officials urge adherence to boating regulations and proper gear use to prevent accidents on the water.  Minot Daily News

  • Former Olympic silver medalist Virgil Hill will return to his home state in October to promote the pro debut of Jose and Rafael Lopez on October 25 at the Minot Auditorium—he plans to visit local gyms and answer questions to boost local support.  Northern Sentry
  • Minot North sports teams are working hard this fall season— the football team won 45 to 14 over Red River last Friday and will play their homecoming game tonight at Sentinel Stadium at 7 p.m., while the boys tennis team won close matches, several girls swimming athletes qualified for state, and the girls golf team placed well in recent meets.  Northern Sentry
  • Tickets are on sale for the Badlands Circuit Finals Rodeo, which will be held from October 10th to 12th at the North Dakota State Fair Center in Minot. Top cowboys and cowgirls will compete in eight events — winners move on to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo and the event will feature rodeo clown Dennis Halstead with announcers Bob Tallman and Garrison Allen.  Northern Sentry
