COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Richard Demers, a Canadian classic car enthusiast, will host a food drive at Minot’s Scandinavian Heritage Park on Sept.2—part of his 4,000-mile Feed the Hungry Tour that starts Aug.31 in Edmonton and will visit 13 cities before reaching the Revival AAA Glidden Tour in Owensboro, Kentucky.  Minot Daily News
  • On Friday, Aug. 29, Edgewood residents crafted and presented 17 wreaths to honor local veterans and rededicate an updated veterans wall. Veterans such as Norris Abrahamson and Marvin Hagen expressed their gratitude at the ceremony—showing that freedom comes at a cost.  Minot Daily News
  • Local businesses will host the first annual Sweat for Vets at Festival on Main on Sept. 13, where participants pay $15 to join a Zumba class by YMCA or a CrossFit workout by CrossFit Minot—each participant receives a shirt, raffle ticket, and a $50 goodie bag from Total Nutrition to support Vets for Vets. Marine Corps veteran Michael Hanson said the event aims to provide veteran peer support and build a reliable network for servicemembers.  KFYR-TV

ECONOMY NEWS

  • ND farmers are struggling to sell soybeans as tariffs imposed on Aug. 1 — which led China to stop buying the crop — have caused prices to drop ahead of harvest.  KFYR-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Minot State University welcomed its largest freshman class in 14 years with 415 new students—a 15% increase over last year. The school also welcomed transfer and graduate students, reaching a first-day enrollment of 2,657 as final numbers will be reported later.  Minot Daily News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Minot City Council now has 15 applicants for the vacant seat after Aryan 'Ari' Siadat withdrew because he did not meet the nine month residency requirement. The council will interview the remaining candidates Tuesday at 4 p.m.—they may choose to appoint a candidate, call a special election, or leave the seat vacant.  Minot Daily News

  • KMOT said that local teams played a Class A 9-man game under the lights on August 29th. The match showed strong play from local athletes.  KFYR-TV
