- ➤ On Aug. 16, a Minot Lucky for Life ticket sold at M&H Gas — 25 Burdick Expressway won its holder $25,000 a year for life, and the gas station received a $2,500 bonus. The winner may choose between an annuity or a lump-sum cash payment while the prize remained unclaimed as of Aug. 18. Minot Daily News
- ➤ The Ward County Commission passed a new camping ordinance on Tuesday, Aug. 19 that gives homeless campers 48 hours to leave a county-owned river deadloop island where unsafe campfires, litter, and theft were reported. Chief Deputy Larry Hubbard said law enforcement will contact the campers — offering services with local partners rather than making arrests. Minot Daily News

- ➤ Risha (Allen) Bergstrom, music teacher at John Hoeven Elementary, was named Ward County Teacher of the Year for 2025 after nearly 20 years in teaching. She began her career in English before switching to music in 2021 and now uses social media to share creative lessons with students. Minot Daily News
- ➤ The ND Department of Public Instruction began implementing Senate Bill 2241—the new charter school law that took effect Aug 1. School Superintendent Kirsten Baesler said the department will hold public meetings and invite public comment while awaiting final approval from the Attorney General and the Legislature's Administrative Rules Committee, meaning charter schools will not open during the 2025 to 2026 school year. - ➤ At a City Council meeting on Aug. 18, Minot officials discussed a 2026 preliminary budget that cuts the property tax request by over $2 million by lowering road maintenance funds and shifting sales tax from economic development to property tax relief — proposals that still raise taxes by 13% from last year. Council members also debated plans for police station remodeling and a possible special meeting before the Sept. 15 public hearing. Minot Daily News

- ➤ Minot Air Force Base found mosquitoes carrying West Nile Virus last month at a park on base and is now boosting surveillance and control measures around housing areas. Residents, especially those over 50 or with weakened immunity, are advised to use repellent, wear long sleeves and pants, and remove standing water—steps meant to reduce the risk of severe symptoms.
