COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Citizens Alley, a new downtown gathering space run by Local Motives, opened on August 11 and hosted its first events with live music, games and pickleball. The space will switch to winter use in October with an ice rink — and more public events are planned to further connect local residents.  Minot Daily News

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Friday, Aug. 8, the Minot Police Department responded to a workplace incident at an industrial park east in Minot where 38-year-old Leroy Nelson died — investigations are underway and further details have not been released.  Minot Daily News
  • Minot firefighters responded on Aug. 10 at 2:34 a.m. after a vehicle parked in front of a fire hydrant delayed their efforts to put out a fire spreading toward a nearby home — police later cited the owner.  KFYR-TV

CRIME NEWS

  • Justyn Montana Smith, a 35-year-old from Minot, pleaded guilty to four counts of terrorizing after threatening restaurant staff with a replica BB gun in May and was sentenced to time served on Aug. 7 in North Central District Court — he must also avoid contact with the victims, forfeit the gun, and pay $525 in fines.  Minot Daily News
  • State prosecutors reached a plea deal with Danie Breijo — aged 41 from Surrey — that reduces his murder charge to manslaughter for the Christmas Eve shooting death of Master Sgt. Nicholas Van Pelt and injury to a female victim, with Breijo also set to plead guilty to aggravated assault and reckless endangerment and face a proposed concurrent sentence of 20 years plus additional penalties pending judge approval.  Minot Daily News
  • A Minot man was arrested after he shot a man in the face multiple times with a BB gun in Devils Lake on August 10th near Railroad Avenue and 4th Avenue NE—he now faces charges for aggravated assault with a dangerous weapon, terrorizing and reckless endangerment.  KFYR-TV
  • A Surrey man—Daniel Breijo—is accused of fatally shooting Air National Guardsman Nicholas Van Pelt in a northwest Minot apartment on Christmas Eve and is taking a plea deal that lowers the charges to manslaughter while he will also plead guilty to aggravated assault and reckless endangerment, with a 20-year sentence pending court approval.  KFYR-TV

  • Robert Karem (congressional staff delegate) visited Minot Air Force Base on Tuesday, Aug. 5 and toured a B-52H Stratofortress to learn about the base's mission.  Minot Daily News
