COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Young volunteers led the 4-H Food Booth by managing food service and showing strong community leadership during the event.  KFYR-TV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • KT Animal Supply announced it will change its name and relocate soon—details on the new name and location will be shared later. The company said the move is part of its plan to improve service for its customers.  KFYR-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Nurturing Families Program begins on Sept. 16 and runs until Dec. 16 in Minot and online with classes held 5:30—8 p.m. each Tuesday at the Extension office at 900 13th St. SE where participants receive a light supper and childcare. The course is funded by the North Dakota Department of Human Services Children and Family Services Division in partnership with NDSU Extension and registrations can be made by contacting Holly Arnold at the North Dakota Extension Service for Ward County.  Minot Daily News
  • Minot State University is joining a group of North Dakota colleges approved for a National Science Foundation E-CORE award that will provide $7.96 million over four years to build STEM research capacity statewide—this project will expand education through outreach at rural schools, recruitment at undergraduate institutions, and networking among research teams.  Minot Daily News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Aug. 4, Minot City Council voted on a proposal to reallocate the first penny of sales tax, but the measure failed on a 3-3 tie; Council member Rob Fuller said he would continue his efforts while Council member Paul Pitner directed staff to draft a new half percent tax for public safety to be considered later. The council also approved an early termination of City Manager Harold Stewart’s contract — moving his departure to Aug. 23 to save money and allow his assistant, Tom Joyce, to serve as interim manager until a permanent replacement is found.  Minot Daily News
  • The U.S. Senate approved a bill to aid North Dakota’s military missions and veteran care, with funding for improvements such as security upgrades at Minot Air Force Base (nuclear modernization) and better veteran health services at places like the Fargo National Cemetery (infrastructure enhancements).  Minot Daily News

HEALTH NEWS

  • A local resident mowed her yard with a battery-operated push mower and got it stuck in pine tree branches while burning 600 calories in a 90-minute workout. She plans to use a step counter and start earlier next time — lessons that show the health benefits of hard yard work.  Minot Daily News
