COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Broadway Circle family shelter and affordable apartment complex had its ribbon cutting on July 31 with Acting Mayor Mark Jantzer, city grant administrator Chris Plank and local representatives from Sens. Kevin Cramer and Sen. John Hoeven, and it is funded by the city's $74 million National Disaster Resilience Program. Pathfinder Services of North Dakota will operate the facility, which features six family units, 17 low- to moderate-income apartments, and two commercial spaces—one hosting a food pantry and restaurant—and it will open in September after contract updates are approved on Aug. 18.  Minot Daily News
  • Macy Humiston at Minot AFB created a painted rock snake called Rocksy to bring the community together—residents are invited to add a painted rock along Rockridge Circle and Peacekeeper Street where Rocksy has grown to about 150 rocks. Macy said the project is a fun summer activity and may be moved or taken down when the weather turns cold.  Northern Sentry
  • Local farmers’ markets continue a cherished tradition as vendors supply fresh produce & homemade goods with five weekends left before Labor Day on Sept 1, assuring residents that summer is far from over. Anne Gates from North Prairie Farms says popular items like radishes, kale & elderberry syrup are expected to sell out quickly while the community can also attend the Hands Across The Border event at the International Peace Garden on August 9 at 11 a.m.  Northern Sentry
  • Three cousins from Williston and West Fargo attended a three-day Christmas in July minicamp at Triangle Y Camp near Lake Sakakawea starting July 20th, where they enjoyed kayaking, swimming, and face painting. Camp director Mallory Gray and her team ensured the campers were safe and busy—helping them form memories they will cherish for years.  Northern Sentry

  • Entrepreneurs at Minot AFB have begun selling dakrat merchandise such as figurines, shirts and stickers that mark a summer trend on base. ARF Studio and Dash of Vinyl started their companies early this summer—donating part of their profits to wildlife conservation.  Northern Sentry

CULTURE NEWS

  • Military spouses Ashley Vanley and Lisa Fortney are capturing important moments at Minot AFB amid the fast pace of military life—documenting family reunions, milestones, and everyday changes to preserve memories. Their work shows how creativity grows in a close-knit community that supports military families.  Northern Sentry
  • The International Music Camp, held in the heart of the International Peace Garden between North Dakota and Manitoba, offers a week of music training and personal growth for young artists—combining band, choir, jazz, art, and digital media sessions under the guidance of directors Tim and Christine Baumann. Since 1956, the camp has evolved to include world-class faculty and diverse activities that foster international friendships and cultural understanding.  Northern Sentry
  • Residents from Minot can drive 2.5 hours to see the 32-mile Enchanted Highway—an outdoor art exhibit by local artist Gary Greff with huge metal sculptures lining I-94 between Gladstone and Regent. A new sculpture called The Knight and the Dragon will be added later this summer, and the route ends at the Enchanted Castle with a gift shop and motel.  Northern Sentry

  • Minot was named a 2025 Great American Defense Community on July 18 for its long-standing support of Minot Air Force Base and its military families—one of only three communities chosen this year.  Northern Sentry
  • The 5th Bomb Wing Safety Team at Minot Air Force Base was named August Squadron of the Month and has 12 professionals who manage flight, occupational and weapons safety. The team reviews 27 B-52s, 8 UH-1s and 4.4M square feet of property—ensuring safe operations for 12,500 airmen, civilians and families on base.  Northern Sentry
