COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Four AmeriCorps members from Souris Basin’s Community Builder program in Minot transitioned to Strengthen ND after federal budget cuts ended part of the program in May. They joined nearly 100 other volunteers and will continue their community service under the new sponsor—Strengthen ND, which assumed the financial burden to keep positions steady.  KFYR-TV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Whiskey Nine, a popular restaurant in downtown, will close its doors this weekend—owners said July 19 is the last day so they can spend more time with family and focus on their main businesses.  KFYR-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • After-school programs at Erik Ramstad and Central Middle schools in Minot will close on Aug. 23 — district officials said declining student participation made the programs unviable.  KFYR-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Tuesday, the Ward County Commission approved an ordinance to remove unauthorized campers from a county-owned island east of Holiday Village Mobile Home Park—County Engineer Dana Larsen and Sheriff Robert Roed said rising trash, theft, and safety risks led to the measure, which gives campers 48 hours to remove their property or face trespassing charges.  Minot Daily News
  • Minot Air Force Base recently deployed several B-52 aircraft, airmen and support equipment to Anderson Air Force Base in Guam — they operate as part of the 23rd Expeditionary Bomb Squadron to support Pacific Air Forces’ training with allies and reinforce rules in the Indo-Pacific region.  KFYR-TV
  • Minot Air Force Base has expanded its wellness program with the HOPE Spiritual Fitness Initiative to help airmen and Guardians build spirit and support one another. Capt. Kelli Williamson leads the effort that began early spring and will add more Hope Specialists in the coming months—linking aircrew with needed aid.  Minot Daily News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Sanford Health’s Northwest Family Clinic at 1500 21st Ave NW in Minot is offering sports physical exams for student-athletes from junior high through college ahead of the new school year. Exams are available today from 5 to 8 p.m.—each costs $35 with parental permission, with additional sessions on July 30 from 5 to 8 p.m. and Aug. 10 from noon to 4 p.m.  KFYR-TV
  • North Dakota Health and Human Services announced that Minot State University’s North Dakota Center for Persons with Disabilities is one of seven groups to share $353,983 in suicide prevention grants. The funding will train professionals and support individuals with disabilities and mental health challenges — projects will run from Aug. 1 through June 30.  Minot Daily News

  • Minot’s Big M building, an eight-story former bank at 123 1st St. SW, is for sale as it awaits redevelopment after EPIC Companies bought it in December 2021 and later filed for bankruptcy. City and county officials are watching late tax payments and the tax increment financing agreement—lien owners are expected to protect their investment.  Minot Daily News
