Good morning, Minot. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 18th of June.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Souris Valley Amateur Radio Club is hosting Field Day 2025 on Saturday and Sunday, June 28-29 near Magic City Discovery Center in Minot. The event runs for 24 hours (starting at noon on Saturday) and gives visitors a chance to try amateur radio (for emergency communications practice).  Minot Daily News
  • Minot residents now can use the reopened road near Buffalo Wings and Rings and Best Buy to access the mall’s northeast side—this rebuilt route is part of the Puppy Dog Coulee project as construction continues on nearby phases by Target, Dakota Plaza strip mall and McDonald’s.  KFYR-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Michael Frye has been selected as Minot’s new police chief—Dale Plessas will serve as deputy chief as the department prepares for future challenges.  KFYR-TV
  • Minot City Council voted 4-2 to cancel plans to hire six firefighters after learning that the federal SAFER grant only covered part of the cost and that hiring the new positions would require nearly $619,000 in local funds over three years — after already spending $4,000 on a grant writer — and the grant application will open July 3.  Minot Daily News
  • The Ward County Commission voted Tuesday to begin a multi-year paving project on County Road 23—after residents submitted over 130 petition signatures and raised safety concerns, including a recent motorcyclist death. Highway Engineer Dana Larsen said the project will start with a design phase in 2026, with bids expected in 2027 and paving planned for 2028 or 2029—using state funds and local sales tax revenues to improve road safety and connectivity.  Minot Daily News
  • During a downtown debate, four mayoral candidates—Josiah Roise, Mark Jantzer, Paul Pitner, and Rob Fuller—shared their visions for the city's future. The special mayoral election will be held on August 5 and the winner will serve the remaining term until next June.  KFYR-TV

SPORTS NEWS

  • Five veteran coaches were named the Special Achievement Award winners by the North Dakota Associated Press Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association after winning at least 75 percent voting approval from NDAPSSA members—among them, Minot basketball’s Dean Winczewski and four others recognized for decades of coaching success.  KFYR-TV
  • Johnnie Candle explained that catching walleye in our lakes is much like chasing speckled sea trout along the Florida Gulf—using a seven‑foot rod, size 2,500 reel, and similar tackle works well for both. Next week, Candle and Lee Timmerman will be on Lake Sakakawea to offer more Pro’s Pointers to local anglers.  KFYR-TV
