COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Minot Meals on Wheels delivers over 400 hot meals a day to seniors served by 200 volunteers as part of the Minot Commission on Aging’s program. The service, which has grown 20% since last year, relies on city and state funds + donations.  KFYR-TV
  • Monica Schlabach, the 91st Missile Wing command spouse, is leaving Minot this summer. Over nearly four years at the base, she embraced strong community support — she said it shaped her leadership and will guide her future visits.  Northern Sentry
  • Minot pools are set to welcome summer visitors as the free AFB Outdoor Pool opens today, pending weather, and Roosevelt Park Pool is scheduled to reopen on June 5 with enhanced safety measures.   • Photographer Aaron Patton began his 50-state portrait series last March to capture American identity — North Dakota residents in Mandan marked his 18th state stop and he will soon visit Medora as part of his three-to-four-year tour.  KFYR-TV
  • Tim Chapman of the International Peace Garden unveiled a year-round conservatory that houses the Don Vitko Cacti and Succulent Collection (featuring about 5,000 dryland plants) and offers a horticulture library, cafe, gift shop, and winter cabin rentals.  Northern Sentry

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Minot's Youth Center has a busy summer schedule with 3D printing classes starting June 3 and STEM Camp for ages 9 and up from June 1 to 5. Members will also enjoy game nights, adventure camp, arts classes, and family outings to local attractions through August.  Northern Sentry
  • Several Minot schools will hold graduation ceremonies Sunday, May 24. Minot High and Minot North High will celebrate at the MSU Dome (Minot North at 1 p.m. and Minot High at 4 p.m.) with high honor graduates speaking, while other local schools host events on their own campuses.  Minot Daily News
  • The Minot Spouses Club provided purple graduation cords to 79 military-affiliated seniors (55 at Minot North, 13 at Minot High and 11 at local schools/homeschools) during recent ceremonies.   • Minot High senior Sophia Bell will collect her second diploma Sunday after earning an associate degree from Dakota College at Bottineau through the LEAP program on May 15 — she is the first in the district to achieve this and plans to study biology at Pepperdine University.  Minot Daily News
  • Minot Public Library and Ward County Public Library launch the Summer Reading Challenge with a scavenger hunt on May 30 (1-2:30 p.m.) at Main Street Books. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • ND Game and Fish officials said rebuilding deer habitat on private lands will take time and more funding as they use voluntary conservation programs to boost wildlife recovery. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Airman First Class Gabriela Calverley earned the Diamond Sharp Award at Minot Air Force Base on May 21 for outstanding leadership and dedication to her fellow Airmen — her achievement with the 69th BGS Knighthawks highlighted exceptional service across the installation.  Northern Sentry
  • Minot voters will decide on June 9 on a half percent sales tax to fund $26.76 million in park maintenance, including improvements at local facilities. If approved, the tax will generate about $6.5 million a year plus lower property tax mills from 38 to 26, taking effect this fall.  Minot Daily News
