- ➤ On May 5, defenders of the 91st Missile Security Forces Squadron marched through Oak Park with about 180 participants carrying 1,200 pounds of food, clothing and supplies—donated to support local families, underprivileged children and the homeless through a partnership with Souris Valley United Way led by Staff Sgt Scott Rader. - ➤ Daryl Frye of ND State Fair said community groups can volunteer at the upcoming 9-day fair to fill positions at concerts, gates, and parking lots and earn funds while earning free admission for a 4-hour shift—groups like the curling club, Alzheimer’s Association and Minot Public School Foundation have already signed up. - ➤ Minot firefighters quickly put out a kitchen fire at a southeast apartment Thursday morning when heavy smoke from a stove was detected—no injuries were reported and residents returned to their apartments. KFYR-TV

EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Minot State University honored its Class of 2025 on May 5 — including five graduates from the Advancing Students Toward Education and Employment Program — at a commencement ceremony; the ASTEP program, North Dakota’s first Inclusive Post-Secondary Education program, helped students gain skills for independent living. - ➤ A certified playground inspector from Minot AFB reviewed seven playgrounds at Lewis and Clark Park, Bud Ebert Park, the Child Development Center, and the Youth Center and submitted his 2025 reports to leadership last week. He warned that parents should check for hazards such as head entrapment, inadequate fall surfacing— and equipment degradation to keep children safe during outdoor play this summer. Northern Sentry
- ➤ North Dakota State University students will head west for a 12-day summer program, arriving in Minot Monday to meet energy industry leaders and earn academic credit. The 37 students will visit companies including Hess Corp. on May 20, Neset Consulting on May 21, the Bakken Area Skills Center on May 22, ALLETE Clean Energy on May 27, Steffes on May 29 and Marathon Petroleum Refinery on May 30 — they will also attend cultural events such as a rodeo and a dinner cruise. - ➤ Minot State and volunteer partners planted 50 pounds of red clover seeds as a cover crop on five acres at the former Erik Ramstad Middle School site. The project uses no-till methods to boost soil health and reintroduce Indigenous curriculum—volunteers expect to see blooms by the end of summer. KFYR-TV
