  • On Sunday, May 11, Roosevelt Park Zoo in Minot will celebrate Mother’s Day by offering free admission for moms with the purchase of one child's ticket—families can explore the exhibits, view the animals, and enjoy the spring weather.  Minot Daily News
  • Family and friends are preparing to welcome veterans returning from the Western ND Honor Flight — a planned event honoring their service — as they await the veterans' arrival.  KFYR-TV
  • Local groups, organizations and families braved a cold Saturday morning around Oak Park for the eighth annual Minot Walk for Autism, organized by Royal Therapy Services—led by speech-language pathologist Cassie Sheppard—who said the event aimed to raise awareness and break the stigma of autism.   • City crews began picking up unwanted items for spring cleanup week on April 28 and will cover each city quadrant from the southeast to the northeast through May 2. Residents should set items out on the curb the night before—those with extra garbage may also drop it off at the landfill with a copy of their water bill for a free pickup.  KFYR-TV

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A house fire in the 1000 block of Valley Street closed access on Monday morning after fire crews from all five stations responded and the only resident evacuated safely — firefighters managed hotspots on the second floor as the investigation continued.  KFYR-TV

CRIME NEWS

  • A Velva man was arrested after leading police on a nearly hour-long pursuit in rural Ward County early Sunday morning — he faces felony DUI 4th offense, fleeing from law enforcement and misdemeanor driving under revocation charges.  KFYR-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Ward County Teacher of the Year Risha Allen has taught for nearly two decades and recently began teaching music at John Hoeven Elementary—she uses creative songs and games to help students learn rhythms while engaging their interest in music. Allen is now in the running for North Dakota Teacher of the Year, with her innovative techniques drawing attention both inside and beyond the classroom.  KFYR-TV
