COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Since last year, a program by Souris Valley United Way and Minot Automotive Company provides free vehicles to Minot families who work and have children under 18. The program gifted its fourth car on Wednesday and accepts applications through Community Action (Minot Area Homeless Coalition or Independence, Inc.).  KFYR-TV
  • Minot Area Community Foundation has launched its Match Madness campaign to build local nonprofit endowments for its 25th anniversary — eligible organizations that raise $5,000 from outside donors between April 15 and May 16 will receive a dollar-for-dollar match into their endowment funds, and the first five donor advised funds will get a $5,000 match.  Minot Daily News

CRIME NEWS

  • Minot police arrested 37-year-old Tyrome Darnelle West on Wednesday after a 35-year-old woman reported a domestic assault where he struck, strangled and restrained her while a juvenile was present — he now faces charges for domestic violence with serious bodily injury, felonious restraint and terrorizing.  Minot Daily News

  • Ethan Wiley, a local photographer, has been posting a photo each day since January—he says the project helps him learn new skills and earn praise from his mentor and will help him book more sessions later this year.  KFYR-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At Minot State University on April 11, twenty middle school students from western North Dakota took part in the state’s only local National Civics Bee sponsored by Minot Area Chamber EDC. Clara Zheng of Erik Ramstad Middle School earned first place, Ayden Heilman of Central Middle School placed second, and MacKayla Crosland of Williston Middle School Central Campus came in third while the top ten finishers will move on to the state competition on July 11 in Bismarck.  Minot Daily News
  • North Dakota senators passed an education budget on April 16th that sets up a conference to resolve differences in increasing per-pupil funding from its current rate of $11,072—proposing a 2% raise from the House and a 3% raise from the Senate. The budget also allocates $7.3 million for free meals, $3 million to help paraprofessionals become teachers, and $5.7 million for additional school support, with changes taking effect in July.  KFYR-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Minot crews have been cleaning city streets after winter and will begin residential sweeping on May 6 in the northeast quadrant—further work is set for the northwest on May 20, southwest on June 3, and southeast on June 17. Residents are asked to keep vehicles off the street and move garbage and recycling cans to the berm, and crews may progress early if a quadrant is completed ahead of schedule.  City of Minot

  • Larry Linrud, a 78-year-old Velva man with a long history in aviation, is near finishing restoration of a 1929 WACO airplane that once hauled mail and passengers—he will fly test it after a certified mechanic inspects it before offering it for sale.  KFYR-TV
