COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local food pantry volunteers met Thursday at The Lord’s Cupboard with representatives from Great Plains Food Bank and Souris Basin Planning Council to share ideas for an AmeriCorps VISTA program that will help pantries facing volunteer shortages and lower donations. SBPC is gathering input for a statewide initiative — the program, costing about $40,000 a year, will improve volunteer coordination and outreach — with plans to hire a VISTA member once final details are set.  Minot Daily News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Colossal Laboratories & Biosciences said it bred three dire wolf pups using gene editing that restored key traits from ancient DNA+ it held talks with MHA Nation leadership including Chairman Mark Fox about the cultural significance of the animals as it explored the tribe's potential role in the de-extinction project.  KFYR-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A free five-week Active Parenting class will start April 24 and will meet online from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursdays through May 22—this interactive program, sponsored by the NDSU Extension Service and Parent & Family Resource Center, Region 2, will teach positive discipline and communication techniques for parents of children ages 5-12—those wishing to register should contact the NDSU Extension Service-Ward County.  Minot Daily News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Minot has received about 1¼ inches of moisture since the start of the year—one inch less than last year—and local farmers are planning to adjust their practices as planting season nears. Desiree Carlson from Esther’s Acres said rotating animals every two days and reducing the sheep flock may help improve pasture quality.  KFYR-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lawmakers voted to block the Game and Fish department from imposing new baiting restrictions— the bill now heads to the governor’s desk for review.  KFYR-TV
  • The Ward County Commission is meeting at the county administration building to discuss paving County Road 14 to the Mountrail County line, Rice Lake lot sales, opioid treatment in jail and the schedule for the 2026 budget development — the meeting is open to the public.  Minot Daily News
  • At a meeting in Bismarck, the North Dakota State Water Commission approved $34.3 million in cost-share support for 23 water projects, including $1.31 million for improvements at the Snake Creek Pumping Plant and $153,750 for Ward County dam work. The commission also approved a $41 million loan from the Bank of North Dakota at 2% interest for Minot’s second flood protection project in Roosevelt Park—repayment will come from city sales tax collections.  Minot Daily News
  • Acting mayor Mark Jantzer announced Friday he is running for mayor in the upcoming special election prompted by enough petition signatures + he was appointed after Tom Ross resigned on April 1. The Minot City Council will set the special election date at its April 21 meeting + Jantzer said his service on the council since 2008 gives him the steady leadership needed to complete the vacant term.  Minot Daily News
  • Former Minot Mayor Shaun Sipma said Friday he would not run in the special election and endorsed acting Mayor Mark Jantzer—city officials confirmed enough citizen signatures were collected to force the election following Mayor Tom Ross’s resignation amid an investigation.  KFYR-TV
  • The Economic Development Plan Review Committee in Minot supported keeping the Renaissance Zone and tax exemptions on new construction as they worked through recommendations Friday. Members also discussed using sales tax dollars for economic development and making changes to help the city compete with others.  Minot Daily News
