Good morning, Minot. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 9th of April.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Save the Hall group in Driscoll began remodeling the town’s memorial hall to fix worn floors and update the kitchen and bathrooms while preserving its vintage look (using original memorabilia) and plans to finish in less than two years (much faster than the 10-year plan).  KFYR-TV
  • The Minot Park Board toured the MI-6 and MI-7 flood project site on Monday and decided to close Roosevelt Park Pool and Skate Park for summer—an action taken to protect public safety—while keeping the pickleball courts open with planned accessibility alerts; community members shared mixed reactions on social media.  KFYR-TV

CRIME NEWS

  • Five people were indicted for a drug trafficking ring that moved drugs between Arizona, Colorado and North Dakota, including methamphetamine and fentanyl, and they will face trial (May 6) on charges of conspiracy and distribution.  KFYR-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • North Dakota lawmakers passed two versions of a bill requiring schools to store cell phones away and set them to silent during class time. A conference committee will meet soon to draft a final law that includes exemptions for health reasons and for students who need devices (for example, to support Individualized Learning Plans) and also applies to private schools in one version (ensuring that rules are clearly communicated to parents and students).  KFYR-TV
  • The Minot City Council voted Monday against a proposal for a property tax exemption for all for-profit childcare centers because a review showed some already are tax exempt while others pay tax for commercial buildings + council members estimated a loss of about $44,000 and most disagreed, even though Council Member Lisa Olson argued the exemption could help centers use extra funds for staff raises + lower costs for families.  KFYR-TV
