Good morning, Minot. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 8th of April.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Members of the Minot Quilt Guild hold monthly sewing Saturdays to sew quilts for people in need and mark 30 years of service; the guild donated about 90 quilts last year and now provides fabric kits for members to work on at home (encouraging newer sewers to join).  KFYR-TV
  • Minot was named as one of three Great American Defense Communities by the Association of Defense Communities and will be spotlighted throughout the year through leadership visits + a conference presentation in California. A report earlier this year showed that Minot Air Force Base had a $651 million economic impact in 2024.  KFYR-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Next week a $20 million storm sewer replacement project will start in Minot near Dakota Square Mall to fix about 1,600 feet of failing storm sewers and install new box culverts near Best Buy and Wings and Rings—roadway traffic will stay open as work happens one side at a time. A bypass road will be built for vehicles and parts of 22nd Avenue Southwest will close near McDonald’s—completion is expected by October.  KFYR-TV
  • Minot City Council is set to hold its first regular monthly meeting Monday at 5:30 p.m. at the council chambers at City Hall after former Mayor Tom Ross resigned on April 1, which started a 15-day window for a special election petition—officials noted that if a vote ties at 3—3, the motion will automatically fail.  KFYR-TV
  • Legislators differ on funding for the Mouse River Enhanced Flood Protection Project as the House allocated $125 million in 2025—27 with $76.1 million for this biennium while the Senate is considering $65 million for the next biennium. State and project officials said the debate reflects both economic forecasts and differing ideas about managing funds from oil extraction taxes to support flood control in the Souris Basin.  Minot Daily News
  • On Monday, the city of Minot honored longtime hockey coach Leif Snyder by issuing a proclamation that set April 17 as Leif Snyder Appreciation Day to remember him after he died on March 12 from complications of diabetes; he had also run for city council last year.  KFYR-TV
  • The Minot City Council rejected a tax break for for-profit childcare centers on Monday—about five centers will now face roughly $40,000 in taxes while an extra ten properties could add around $100,000 in tax revenue. More than 400 petition signatures were submitted at City Hall—supporting a mayoral election as Josiah Roise announced his candidacy and met the 293-signature requirement.  Minot Daily News
  • Gen. Thomas Bussiere and Chief Master Sgt. Shawn Aiello visited Minot Air Force Base on March 27-28 and thanked airmen from the 91st Missile Wing and the 5th Bomb Wing for their teamwork. Bussiere stressed the base's key role in national defense—airmen are recognized for their discipline and commitment to safety.  Minot Daily News

HEALTH NEWS

  • North Dakota HHS held Parent and Caregiver Peer Support Training from April 1st to 3rd—23 participants learned skills to support families with children who have behavioral health needs. The initiative, funded by a federal System of Care grant, will expand statewide support with further trainings planned for July and October.  Minot Daily News
  • Minot State University is raising mental health awareness as students and staff wear green bandanas and 'here to listen' bag tags—signals that someone is available to talk.
