  • Flying B Roofing in Minot has launched its 7th Annual Free Roof Giveaway to help a family in need; nominations close April 15 and a winner will be chosen on May 5. Owner Wayne Bontrager said the program was started to give back to the community—nominations can be submitted online.  Minot Daily News

CRIME NEWS

  • Reporter Joe Skurzewski reported a verdict was reached in the trial of State vs. Nichole Rice—no further details were provided.  KFYR-TV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Levana Fransen of Makoti placed first in the third grade division of the Eagles’ annual Children’s Art Contest for grades 3-6 and will receive $200 as a prize from a contest that got hundreds of entries from the United States and Canada. She was sponsored by Watford City Eagles #3543—she learned about the contest from her grandparents William and Karen Rafferty.  Minot Daily News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Civil Air Patrol’s Cadet program in Minot is recruiting youth (ages 12 to 19) interested in aviation, space, or military careers. Current members meet weekly and build skills (leadership, aerospace, fitness, and character) for future opportunities.  KFYR-TV
  • Gov. Kelly Armstrong held a press conference in Bismarck on Wednesday and backed two bills (House Bill 1160 and Senate Bill 2354) that will require public schools to ban student cell phone use during the school day. The proposals will allow school-issued devices for learning and permit exceptions for medical needs or special education.  Minot Daily News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • North Dakotans may face a summer drought as National Weather Service models show a 47% chance for below normal rain from June to August — many areas in the west and central already have only 25 to 50 percent of normal moisture. Early April rains are hoped to help recharge soils for crops, but forecasts later this summer call for warmer temperatures and dry conditions.  Minot Daily News

  • Minot native Dr. Jennifer Gravos-Bauer performed Sidney Health Center's first total ankle replacement surgery on March 19. She trained at Sanford Health in Fargo & said the patient with severe arthritis is expected to resume walking in four weeks.  Minot Daily News
