COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Independence, Inc. in Minot named four new executive committee members on Friday. The nonprofit, which helps individuals with disabilities live independently, announced Rianne Kuhn as president, Ashley Beall as vice president, Lauri Hopwood as secretary/treasurer, and Tonia Vitko in a Member-at-Large role.  KFYR-TV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Local pilot Warren Pietsch received the Sword of Excellence from the International Council of Air Shows during its December convention in Las Vegas & is recognized for a 46-year career that enhanced air shows in our community.  Minot Daily News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Brian Frohlich, a fisheries biological technician in Riverdale, was honored in December when he stepped in to oversee full fall sampling in a short-staffed office — earning a performance-based award from department director Jeb Williams.  Minot Daily News

HEALTH NEWS

  • A new study from Minnesota shows health disparities among people who have been incarcerated or are unhoused. North Dakota lawmaker Karla Rose Hanson says issues like mental health, substance use disorder, and housing instability complicate reentry and support efforts.  Minot Daily News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Minot High senior Maggie Fricke returned to the court on Jan.2 & helped the undefeated Majettes secure a 70-45 win over the Williston Coyotes. Coach Jason Schwarz said her return improved the team's connection on the court.  Minot Daily News
  • On Friday, Jan. 2, the Minot North girls basketball team lost 87-52 to Mandan when leading scorer Elli Laskowski left with an elbow injury (8:41 into the first half). Coach Justin Lauf said the team will learn more about her recovery before Tuesday's game at Bismarck Century.  Minot Daily News
  • Minot United girls hockey fell 4 to 2 to Williston at the Agri Sports Complex on Dec. 30—Brynn Hanson scored both goals to narrow the gap before Williston sealed the win—and the team played Fargo North South on Jan. 2.  Minot Daily News
  • Minot United (9-2-0-0) secured a 6-0 shutout over the Packers at the West Fargo Winter Classic Tuesday, Dec. 30, and extended its winning streak to nine games. The team will host Devils Lake at Maysa Arena on Thursday, Jan. 8 at 7:30 p.m. (home game).  Minot Daily News
